WhatsApp which has been around since 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum as an alternative to pricey SMS service has made a significant improvement on the app by introducing WhatsApp Channels, this significant update was introduced on the June 8, 2023 to build the most private broadcast service.
Channels are a one way broadcast tool for admin to send
text, photos, videos, stickers and polls to help you select channels to follow
and a searchable directory where you can find your hobbies, sports teams,
updates from local officials and more. You can also get to a channel from invite
links sent in chats, e-mail or posted online.
Even though users have asked for this particular update to
take off for so many years, some users still think this move is not exciting
because the same feature was first brought up by Instagram, Snapchat etc. WhatsApp
was popularly known for its static status and the remarkable ‘’can’t talk, WhatsApp
only’’. Others also think the interface is poorly done.
Aspiring to build the most private broadcast service
available. Protecting the personal information of both admins and followers. As
a channel admin, your phone number and profile photo won’t be shown to followers.
Likewise, following a channel won’t reveal your phone number to the admin or
other followers. Who you decide to follow is your choice and its private and
secure.
Channel updates shouldn’t have to stick around forever so only
store channel history on servers for up to 30 days and to make updates
disappear even faster from follower’s devices. Admins will also have the option
to block screenshots and forwards from their channel.
However, the main motive of this Channel introduction is to
support admins with a way for them to build a business around their channel
using expanding payment services as well as the ability to promote certain
channels in the directory to help increase awareness.
